How to Tell If Your Calgary Home Has Poly-B Plumbing
The grey pipe, the PB2110 stamp, and the three places to look before you call anyone.
Poly-B is a dull grey flexible plastic pipe, usually stamped PB2110, and if your Calgary home was built between 1978 and 1998 there is a good chance it is in the walls. You can often confirm it yourself in a few minutes.
Three places to look
- At the hot water tank. The pipes coming off the tank are the easiest to see. Grey, slightly flexible, with copper or brass crimp fittings is the tell.
- In the basement ceiling. If it is unfinished, look up. Poly-B runs are usually visible along the joists.
- Under sinks, at the shut-off valves. Check where the supply lines meet the valve.
What it is not
White or cream flexible pipe is usually PEX, which is the modern replacement and not a problem. Copper is copper. It is specifically the grey stuff, often with the PB2110 stamp, that insurers care about.
